Reader Submission: The Black-Eyed Girl

“This is not a ghost story. It’s more on the ghoul side of things.

It was October of 2012, and I was working the night shift for twelve hours. It must have been about 2:30 or 3:00 a.m. I was driving down a little dead-end dirt road with no houses on it. I made it to the end of the road and turned around. Halfway up the road, about 60 yards ahead and standing in the center, was a little girl wearing a white nightgown. I stopped my car and got out to see if she was alright.

The girl didn’t look familiar so I asked her name. She looked up at me and that was when I saw her eyes. They were completely black, as if her pupils were dilated to cover the whites of her eyes. Once I saw her eyes, the pucker factor hit level ten in a hurry.

She said, ‘Will you come help me?’ Her voice was hollow and chilling. ‘What do you need help with?’ I asked. ‘Just come with me, it won’t take long,’ she said.

Have you heard of the flight or fight instinct? Mine was having an all-out civil war after the little girl said that. I told her ‘If you don’t tell me what you need help with, I’ll just as soon be in my way.’ I’m positive she could hear the shakiness and fear in my voice. She didn’t say anything after that, she just chuckled and turned around. She didn’t leave or start walking. As calmly as I could, I started walking backwards to my car, never taking my eyes off of this girl. I got in my car and started to drive around her. I kept my eye on the girl in my rear view mirror until I was back on the main road.

A little while later, I spoke to my partner about what happened and he just laughed, stating that as small as the town is, he should have seen her as well. Needless to say, it was never written in the dispatch log and thank God I haven’t seen that girl since.”
