Reader Submission: The Haunted Flat

“I would like to share my personal paranormal experience in the apartment where I stayed with my wife and two-year-old son (Sharjah, UAE). Friends, this is not just a story but a real experience.

It was in 2011 that we moved into the apartment, and on the very first day my wife woke up screaming at around 2:00 a.m. saying she saw someone standing near the bedroom door. I just rubbished her, saying this might happen in any new place. After this incident, one or two such incidents kept happening and whenever my wife said something about it I used to either make fun of her or try to convince her it was nothing by saying everything was mere misconceptions.

She often told me incidents like lights getting switched off (the switch itself), TV channels automatically getting changed, that kind of thing. Though I believe in paranormal presences, I did not want to show that as she might get more panicked.

It was during that time my kid started walking and it was during the same period when I myself got scared and understood what really was going on in the house. Since he is our only child, our son used to play alone with his toys, but we slowly realized that he did not seem to be playing alone. We would watch him playing and showing his toys as if there was another person with him. We also noticed that our son often played in one particular place, the spot where my wife claimed she saw someone standing on the very first day of us moving into this apartment.

One night, at around 5:oo p.m., my son was in the bathroom playing in the tub. We remember that the lights were kept on but after some time when my wife went to have a check, she was stunned to see the lights were off. My son, who had seemed like he was playing with someone until that time, suddenly stopped and gave my wife a wry smile. On hearing my wife’s scream, I immediately rushed to the bathroom and took my son out of there.

We immediately left the apartment and went to a nearby mosque to seek some help from the priest (Imam). He told us that there was a ghostly presence in the apartment and that we should not stay there any longer. He also said that sometimes the ghostly figure looked like me and other times it looked like my wife and that’s the reason my son was not scared at all. He said most of the incidents we experienced were real though we didn’t tell him anything in detail.

For the next 10 days, we didn’t go into the apartment and managed to stay at one of my friend’s house. We finally vacated the flat three months before our tenancy contract expired. We have since moved into a new apartment and by God’s grace haven’t experience any such incidents, though at times my son still says ‘Buddah aagaya, Buddah aagaya’ (Hindi meaning – the old man has come, the old man has come).”

  1. I don’t trust this one. If the kid started walking in 2011, he would have been 12-18 months (this also corresponds with the author saying the kid was 2 in 2011). That would make him ~5 years old today, and younger when they vacated the apartment (per the story, clearly this would have had to be over 3 months ago at least). I don’t believe that a parent would leave a child that young alone in the bath for any amount of time, especially for “some time” which implies it wasn’t just a few moments. This doesn’t ring true to me.

  2. Dear Schuyler, I agree with your comments. In fact its my mistake not to mention the exact period when the incidents happened. It all happened over a period of 2.5 years starting June 2011. My son’s DOB is 21.01.2011 and he started walking during the early 2012.

The bath tub incident happened during the mid 2013 which means he was approximately 2.5 years old. Now his age is 3.5 years. The one which I shared is real and no story. Hope this clarifies.
