Ghostly Submarine: The USS Thresher

On April 10, 1963, the USS Thresher sank during a routine test dive, taking 129 souls down with her. Three years later, a family out on a yacht reportedly saw the doomed submarine slip beneath the waves once more.

“Looking into the wind and spray, the five-strong family saw the name Thresher painted on the side of the submarine and saw it was badly damaged along the waterline,” Alan Wood writes in his book, Military Ghosts.

“Suddenly, the submarine rose bodily into the air and sank quickly beneath the rough running sea. Two sailors visible on the submarine did not move as it sank and went down in their positions.”

After returning to shore, the yacht skipper discovered that the Thresher had sank in the same spot he and his family had seen the submarine. Are the victims’ ghosts still out there today, 54 years later?
