Reader Submission: Sounds in the Night

dark creepy house

“Before my mother died of lung cancer, she suffered in our living room. My dad got a hospital bed from somewhere, and that’s where she stayed, getting her morphine.

At night, my mother often felt incredible pain and cried. Because of that, my father ordered us to keep our doors open and wake him up when she cried so that he could take care of her. However, when my mom got weaker, her crying was not loud enough to reach upstairs to our rooms. So, my father got a little stick, which was made out of some kind of light wood. And when my mother hit the stick against her bed frame, it was loud and clear and we could hear her.

That time was the worst of my life. Imagine the psychological torture of hearing your mother crying and suffering all the time. It was especially bad when she had had her dose of morphine, but still suffered. Then, my dad told us to ignore her because we couldn’t do anything and she would soon go to sleep.

The Rocking Horse

“One night when I was maybe 10 – 12 I had trouble falling asleep. My bedroom was the entire top floor of our house with my bed and such being on the left side and storage closets and a play area being on the right.

I was lying in bed when I heard a noise from the other side of the room and saw a rocking horse begin to rock. It was sitting just outside one of the storage closet doors. It proceeded to rock its way halfway across the room and stopped dead under the ceiling light. At this point I was freaking out and just buried my head under the blankets and never peeked out again until morning.

It was all confirmed to not be a dream as the rocking horse was still in the middle of my room when I woke up. Furthermore, I got a stern reprimand from my parents for being up out of bed playing with my toys well past my bedtime. Their bedroom was directly below the storage closet/play area and had heard the creaking of the rocking horse shuffling across the room.”

Reader Submission: The Follower

shadow person

“It first started when my big sister moved to a new set of flats, and we were helping them move in – me, my mum, and my dad – but my sister said if I stayed longer to sort out the spare bedroom she’d give me a lift home.

So I stayed till about half nine, but I told my sister not to worry because she was really tired and she’d had a glass of wine, plus my place was only four stops away on the tube.

We said goodbye, and when I left all the street lamps were out down the street, but I didn’t take any notice. So I carried on walking, but I felt a bit strange. I felt like there were eyes on me, but I carried on until I reached the tube. There was nothing unusual there, so I thought it was just me being superstitious.

Reader Submission: The Road Trip

“This is the most terrifying experience I have ever had:

In 2001, my granddaughter, Cate, was offered a job in Portland, OR. Her own company, a dotcom in San Diego, CA had been caught in the dotcom crash and folded. One of her co-workers had moved to Portland a month or two before the company went belly-up and offered my granddaughter a job.

Cate invited me to accompany her, thinking we could take a leisurely trip up the coast in her new convertible. I accepted because I was going through a very bad time and thought it would be a terrific break to see new country. So, I flew to San Diego.
