Reader Submission: The Haunted Farmhouse

haunted house

I grew up on a small farm in western New York. It was an old farmhouse, built in the 1850s. Weird stuff happened frequently. You’d set an object down, and it would disappear, only to reappear later in the same place. Being a farm, we had a lot of animals, particularly cats and dogs. The cats would often watch something we couldn’t see moving around the room, and sometimes they would hiss at nothing. My little sister and I had a lot of frightening experiences over the years.

Reader Submission: The Haunted Farmstead

“I previously submitted “Terror on the Farm” Here follows a more recent encounter:

I was in my second year of university studying law. Most of my friends were from farms and we spent quite a lot of weekends and holidays on the different farms. The summer of 2005, one of my friends, Charl, invited me and another friend, Rudi, over to his farm for the December holidays as his parents went to the coast to visit relatives.

The farm was a beautiful, but typical, South African Great-Karoo farmstead dating from before the 1900s. The farm was about 75km (47 miles) from the nearest town and about 15km (9 miles) from the nearest main road which itself was not paved or traveled frequently.

The Cemetery

We were looking forward to a good week or two of dirt biking, hunting, and drinking beer. We were there for two days when Charl’s brother, his brother’s girlfriend, and a female friend came to visit. At around 1:00 in the morning, Charl’s brother remarked that the time was right for the farmstead’s ghost to be active and that we should go see if it was around the cemetery. We laughed as ghost stories are a common scare tactic on remote farms in the area. Still, we decided to go. Charl’s brother led everyone to the wooded area at the back of the house and opened a rusty gate which made a high-pitched squeaky noise. To be honest, that sound changed the mood of the party as we were about 50m (164 feet) from the old graveyard.

“I live in South Africa, and this is where my story takes place.

Me and a friend of mine, whose name is Barend, were traveling through the countryside on our way to a small town called Delareyville. We were used to small towns and country areas as we grew up there. However, I had never experienced anything like this.

As we were driving, bad luck struck us like a hot iron and both tires on the left side went flat (his car was a piece of junk). We were soon on the side of the road, at 2 a.m., with only the full moon to light the area around us. There was no civilization nearby, only local farm houses far away. So I decided to leave Barend with the car and walk on to find any entrance to a local farm. I walked for about 2/3 miles and at last found a gate.

Reader Submission: Haunted Farmstead

“My cousin lived in an old farmhouse in the 80’s near a small prairie town called Elstow in Saskatchewan. Her father owned and operated the hotel there during that time although it no longer exists today.

My cousin was going to bartend at the hotel beverage room while her husband worked in Saskatoon, about 40 miles away. They could not believe their good luck when they found the place for rent at such a cheap price. It was an old house, but not decayed like it is today. The farmstead was situated perhaps a half mile from the highway, and then maybe another mile from the hotel, but it was very isolated with absolutely no neighbors in view.

After moving in, my cousin heard footsteps on the stairway or downstairs and at times would smell the scent of oranges in the kitchen. Her husband was away a lot doing shift work, and she was becoming increasingly uncomfortable living in that house.
