Considering the success of found footage films and the current Hollywood trend of revisiting every popular franchise in movie history, it’s a wonder someone hasn’t released Blair Witch 3. However, according to Eduardo Sanchez, director of the original Blair Witch Project, that could soon change.
“We’ve been toying around with a sequel idea that we really like,” Sanchez told Bloody Disgusting. “It’s just a matter of getting our schedules in line and having Lionsgate sign off on the idea. We’ve been ready to do a Blair Witch movie for a long time. We’re as close as we’ve ever been to making it happen but it’s still not a guaranteed thing.”
Though nothing is certain, Sanchez said Blair Witch 3 wouldn’t be another found footage flick, though he would like to bring the original cast – Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams – back for the sequel.
“The plan is to have them back,” Sanchez said. “They’re probably not going to be the main characters but they’re definitely characters in the sequel.”
Fans shouldn’t expect a flashback film, however, nor should they expect Blair Witch 3 to pick up where The Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 left off.
“I actually liked the sequel but at the same time it exists in a world outside of the movie. So if we want to do a sequel to Blair Witch Project, we have to stay in that world.” Sanchez explained.
That decision is probably for the best. Though The Blair Witch Project (1999) netted an amazing $250 million worldwide, the 2000 sequel was a box office flop, bringing in a disappointing $50 million. The Book of Shadows was so bad that it effectively killed off The Blair Witch franchise, preventing the release of more films.
What do you think? Could Blair Witch 3 revive the frightening franchise or should Hollywood let the The Blair Witch series rest in peace?
I’m a HUGE fan of The Blair Witch! I hope to see number 3 ASAP!
