Located 14 miles from Beaufort, South Carolina, the gated community of Harbor Island certainly doesn’t look haunted. Full of brightly-colored beach homes, manicured lawns, and sparkling pools, the upscale neighborhood seems a better place for barbecues and beach games then ghosts and ghouls. However, this bright and sunny island is said to harbor more than a few ghosts. Here are three ghostly tales from Harbor Island, South Carolina.
The Long Dock
The house at 134 Harbour Key Drive boasts a private dock that stretches several feet into the marsh. Though the impressive dock is off limits to island residents, several Harbor Island dwellers have spotted a light hovering over the structure’s wooden planks and shadowy figures drifting around the dock’s fishing pavilion. Could it be the spirit of the former owner who commissioned the dock?
10 Shipwatch Drive
The home at 10 Shipwatch Drive is an average Harbor Island beach house, but its second-story closet is anything but normal. Renters report that the closet door opens and closes by itself and that sandy foot prints appear in the walk-in closet, even when no one is occupying the upstairs guest room. Guests also hear strange stomping sounds in the middle of the night.
The Beach
Head to the beach at night and you may just run across the Harbor Island haunt known as the Gray Man. Never appearing during the day, the Gray Man seems to prefer the dark hours between 10 p.m. and midnight. Late night beach goers have reported seeing a shadowy figure gliding across the beach, a silent spirit that appears without warning and disappears just as mysteriously. Some think the Gray Man is the same wraith that appears on the beaches near Charleston. The Charleston Gray Man is said to herald an impeding disaster such as a hurricane. Is it possible Harbor Island is due for a devastating storm?
