Ghosts on a Plane: 5 Tales of Haunted Aircraft

When most people think of haunted locations, they likely imagine dilapidated old houses, creepy woods, or historical buildings with tragic histories. However, ghosts often lurk in unexpected places, like a modern plane soaring 30,000 feet in the air. Here are five true tales of haunted aircraft. I found the stories on two large aviation forums. Have a nice flight!

One Last Flight Together

“The story goes that a flight attendant went downstairs to prepare the beds for everyone. As she opened the stair house door and looked in an elderly man was sitting on the stairs. When the crew member challenged the “pax” about why he was down in a restricted area he said “Oh sorry, I am traveling with my wife who is upstairs in seat X. She will be worried about me. Can you tell her I am OK?”

The man went upstairs and into the lav just opposite the stair house door. The crew member duly went to talk to the man’s wife who was astonished to hear the story as her husband was indeed traveling home with her but in a coffin in the hold!!

A description of the man was correct as witnessed by the flight attendant and the captain confirmed they were indeed carrying a body. The lav was checked for the man but it was empty!”

NBA Players No Match for Oklahoma City’s Haunted Skirvin Hotel

In January 2010, the Oklahoma City Thunder handily defeated the New York Knicks, scoring 106 points to the Knicks’ 88. Was it skill behind Oklahoma City’s win? Or did a ghost indirectly aid the team?

Located at the corner of 1st Street and Broadway, Oklahoma City’s Skirvin Hilton Hotel regularly hosts teams in town to play the Thunder. The one hundred-year-old building also has a reputation for being haunted. According to a report in the NY Daily News, a two-day stay at the Skirvin left at least two Knicks players convinced the hotel’s spooky stories were true.

Haunted Charleston: The Old City Jail Building

charleston's old city jail at 21 magazine st.

Built in 1802, the Old City Jail housed some of Charleston County’s most infamous criminals, including 19th-century pirates, errant slaves, and Lavinia Fisher, America’s first female serial killer. Thousands of inmates died within the structure’s imposing walls and it’s these tormented spirits that reportedly haunt the 210-year-old building today.

Now owned by Charleston’s School of the Building Arts (SoBA), the jail is generally off-limits to the public, though tourists can take the Haunted Jail Tour offered by Bulldog Tours. Spooked visitors describe objects that disappear, an alarm that goes off for no apparent reason, cell phone batteries that mysteriously die and recharge, heavy doors that open and close on their own, and the sound of heavy breathing in empty cells, among other eerie events. Visitors have also seen a black specter wandering about the halls. A former warden, perhaps?
