5 Haunted Zoos in the United States
Most people head to the zoo to check out the exotic wildlife, but some zoos offer the rarest creatures of all: ghosts! Here are five reportedly haunted zoos in the United States.
A Ghostly Lioness Continues to Stalk Her Prey – Cincinnati Zoo
Legend has it that visitors who stroll alone in isolated areas of the Cincinnati Zoo may find themselves stalked by a ghostly lioness. Guests hear the sound of heavy footsteps and low growls, but turn around to find nothing behind them. Glowing, green eyes also shine from wooded sections of the zoo.
Bumps and Boos – Philadelphia Zoo
Legend has it the Philadelphia Zoo is home to a number ghosts which make their presence known through flickering lights and full-bodied apparitions. Syfy’s Ghost Hunters investigated the zoo in 2010 and encountered strange thumps, bumps, and old-timey music.
The Dearly Departed Director – Alexandria Zoo
The Ghost Hunters gang also stopped by Louisiana’s Alexandria Zoo where they investigated the legend of Les, the former director rumored to haunt the facility. Leslie “Les” Whitt died in 2008, but friends have since heard his voice and spotted his spirit in the zoo.
A Long-Haired Wraith – Oklahoma City Zoo
Some people claim that a pale woman with long hair lurks inside in the staff area of the Oklahoma City Zoo aquatic area. Famed psychic Chip Coffey even stopped by the zoo in 2011 to talk about the rumored haunting. However, many local researchers say the story is nonsense.
A Former Elephant Trainer Lingers – Fort Worth Zoo
According to a CBS affiliate in Dallas/Fort Worth, an elephant trainer crushed in a 1987 accident haunts the Fort Worth Zoo’s elephant and zebra areas. The zoo is also reportedly home to a ghostly woman in white who paces in front of the zoo’s café, carrying a parasol and looking forlorn.
EDIT: Here’s an experience one reader had at the Forth Worth zoo.
“I have seen the ghost of the woman at the Fort Worth Zoo cafe. She is wearing a white dress and is very real looking. I thought she was an employee wearing a 1800’S white hoped skirt with a parasol walking by as a period actor. She is only 5 to 5 to 5’2″. When I turned to look again she vanished.”

A Wraith?
Is that the wrong word?
Cool
Next time i head to the fort worth zoo i shall make a conscious effert to keep my eyes open! Tho we did go in june of this year, and we had visited the eelephant area ( i have three kids, and they have two baby elephants about a year old, so we hung out in that area a good while) i didnt notice anything strange or feel anything out of the ordinary.
Yeah, I imagine it would be pretty hard to notice ghostly activity in a zoo.
I will do the same when I head to the Alexandria Zoo. I have lived in Alexandria Louisiana all of my life and been to the zoo several times and never experienced anything. Then again, I may have gone before Les died.
U GUYS SHOULD GOOLE THE (HUNTED PICNIC TABLE IN THE HOLLYWOOD CA HILLS IN HOLLYWOOD CA)
IT’Z A GOOD STORY IF U LIKE GHOSTS,,,,,,,
GHOST BELEAVER 100%
I’ve worked at the zoo for a year and I’ve never heard of anyone witnessing the lioness but many of my coworkers, as well as myself, have had many experiences with a ghost in the basement of the gift shop. Some have seen a full bodied apparition in black walk by the aisles, others have seen legs walking between aisles, and others have heard noises and seen things move with no apparent reason
