Reader Submission: The Imaginary Friend
“My dad owns a triplex and we always lived in one apartment as a kid while he rented the other two. When I was around 4 or 5 years old, my cousin and I started playing with a girl named Bridget. She was around our age, although she did seem really shy. I didn’t know this until years later, but apparently our parents assumed she was an imaginary friend because they had no clue who we were talking about. One day Bridget just stopped showing up.
Fast forward about ten years…one of dad’s tenants was mega pregnant, had her baby, came back a few days later, and was talking to dad. She asked kind of nervously if dad thought the house was haunted. He shrugged, said he believed it was possible, and then ‘Why do you ask?’ She kind of relaxed when he said he believed it was possible and told him this:
She had fallen asleep on the couch one night, as she often did. She woke up in the middle of the night and there was a little girl sitting on the edge of the couch, watching her. She said she normally would have freaked out, as would anyone that woke up to a random child in their house watching them sleep. However, she said she actually got this really calm, serene feeling. The girl stood up and walked out of the living room. About 20 minutes later, the tenant went into labor.
That weekend, I went to my dad’s house (my parents were divorced by then and we went to his place on the weekends.) He asked if I remembered what Bridget looked like and had me describe her. I did. He said he believed me that she wasn’t imaginary anymore. The tenant described her EXACTLY the way my cousin and I had when we were younger.
We’ll be moving into the same house when we go home. I say as long as Bridget isn’t hurting anybody, I don’t mind her being there. Maybe she’ll give my daughter someone to play with.”
