Ghosts Walk South Carolina’s Oakwood Cemetery

Oakwood Cemetery in Spartanburg, South Carolina, is the final resting place for thousands of men, women, and children. Like many cemeteries, Oakwood has reputation for being haunted. It also a reputation for grave robbing and Satanic rituals.
Hell’s Gate
According to local legend, Satanists once performed unspeakable rites at Oakwood. This activity reportedly created a portal to hell, enabling evil spirits to mingle with the innocent souls buried there. Today, visitors report seeing dark masses, hearing disembodied voices in the woods, and feeling deeply uneasy. In 2012, a vandal unearthed a coffin and stole a skull, leading some to wonder if the Satanists are still around.


Children’s Ghosts
Oakwood is also full of children’s spirits, perhaps because so many children are buried there. Photos taken at the old cemetery reveal small faces peeping from behind trees or headstones. Some visitors have reported hearing children’s disembodied voice singing, laughing, or crying. At times, a ghostly boy will appear to kids his own age, gripping a ball and asking to play.


Potter’s Field
Much of the paranormal activity in Oakwood occurs in the cemetery’s common grave area, a section for people who died with no money or no family. State prisoners were also buried here. The activity in this section ranges from orbs and mists to disembodied moans and scratching sounds.
