Built in 1876, the Silver Queen Hotel in Virginia City, NV is a historic landmark with a haunted reputation. Staff, guests, and countless paranormal investigators are certain that ghosts roam the 138-year-old property. Could they be right?
“During our recent school holidays, my classmates and I rented a chalet in Sentosa (a resort in Singapore). The chalet was one of the special company chalets. My stewardess sister managed to book it for us. It was nice place, real close to the beach.
At night, we tried to scare the girls with ghost stories. We’d sit around and trade the spookiest. The girls got pretty scared, and to tell you the truth, so did the guys!
One night we decided to hit the sack early as we had big day of canoeing the next morning. However, just as we were about to sleep, it started to rain heavily. I tell you, that shook us up pretty badly, especially after a long session of rain hitting the roof and window panes like bullets. Flashes of lightning and thunder also jarred our nerves. Somebody suggested we check to make sure that all the windows and doors were locked, and everyone agreed it was a good idea.
“This happened in the early 1980s when I was an officer with the Oklahoma City Police Department.
One week I noticed that several officers’ cars had Ghost Busters stickers stuck to the windows. I was confused and asked one of the guys what was with all the Ghost Buster stuff. He told me that a few officers had been on a call recently where the occupants had complained of paranormal activity. I wasn’t there, but my buddy said that when the officers arrived at the house, the residents were outside, terrified, while the sounds of banging doors and shattering glass came from inside the house. The officers thought an intruder was inside so they brought a canine, Red, to help clear the property.
Now, Red was the meanest damn dog you ever saw, but he absolutely refused to go inside the home. He growled and whined but would not set a paw inside. Eventually, the crashing and banging noises stopped and a few officers checked out the home. Everything inside was destroyed, but there was no one around. The residents claimed the sounds had suddenly started up when they were inside and had no idea what caused them.
That story always gave me the creeps. None of the guys ever really talked about what happened because they were afraid everyone would think they were crazy.”

“When I was younger, I was part of the air cadets. I was often at the squadron (the place in which we’d meet for our weekly meetings) until late. One night, my step father asked me to go through to the next building, which was connected to the first building by a hallway, and photocopy some documents while he was in a meeting. The other building was closed as it was about 11:30 p.m. and so the lights were all turned off. However, there was enough light for me to see where I was going so I kept the lights off.
