The Ghosts of Captain Jack’s Stronghold

On October 3, 1873, the U.S. Army hanged Modoc Indian chief “Captain Jack” Kintpuash for the murders of General Edward Canby and Reverend Eleazar Thomas, both leaders of a Federal peace commission. Though Captain Jack and three of his tribesmen died 140 years ago today, some believe the spirits of these men live on.

Do Victims of the Curacoa Sinking Haunt the Queen Mary?

On October 2, 1942, the RMS Queen Mary accidentally rammed and sank her escort ship, the HMS Curacoa, as she carried over 10,000 troops to Europe. More than 200 men died in the collision, and now Queen Mary staff and visitors reportedly hear strange sounds coming from the ship’s bow.

The Ghosts of Yosemite National Park

On October 1, 1890, Congress established Yosemite National Park. Exactly 123 years later, the park remains a major attraction, drawing over 3.7 million visitors each year. Legend has it a few ghosts enjoy the site as well.
